"Techniques in Embalming The Obese Decedent"

The Center for Disease Control has stated that America is home to the most obese people in the world. Obesity in adults has increased by 60% within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years.  Time magazine has defined obesity as a crisis being that fully two-thirds of U.S. adults are officially overweight, and about half of those have graduated to full-blown obesity.  The facts are it has been a challenge for embalmers and it will continue to be a challenge. Shun Newbern will examine the procedures during embalming and set a higher standard of performance by making obese cases presentable for viewing.  We will also look at various resources for dispositions.  At the conclusion attendees will understand and be able to use various techniques in restoring and presenting a better image for the family and implementing the restrictive cervical method for embalming.

"Mortuary Litigation From A to Z"

Shun shares some important issues and examine the standard of care from the first call to the final internment. Every action with the family can result in some form of litigation.  The session will observe mortuary and embalming cases handled by Shun Newbern & Associations and others by offering solutions for owners and managers to better train staff to protect the business. The session will also explore techniques that attorneys used to gain leverage and win cases. Lawsuits mostly end in settlements and never make it to court, but if the issue hits the media, it can be damaging to the profits and the image of the company.  The session will save directors thousands and possible millions by simple observing the potential issues in their funeral home.

"Mastering Embalming Challenges"

We will examine the embalming challenges of emaciation, edema, jaundice and autopsy that are often seen. This session will remind the attendees the psychological effects that an open casket has on a grieving heart and how our role in that experience is extraordinary.  Too often embalmers take the embalming procedure lightly by not measure the weight of the responsibility, which may lead to rush or delay embalming.   Shun will ask his favorite question, "What is the difference between a $200 embalming fee and a $1,550 embalming fee?" The viewing for many cultures is the most important aspect of the funeral planning process. How do charge for the process? We will demonstrate embalming techniques that are basic and some advance in conversation, implementation and presentation leaving a mark on the family that can not be erased in order to create a successful viewing.
